How Instagram media types differ
Almost every failed download comes down to a mismatch between the kind of media you are looking at and the tool you opened. Instagram presents four broadly different things, and they behave differently once you are outside the app.

Feed posts live on a
/p/URL. A feed post can be one photo, one video, or an album of up to ten slides mixing both. The URL looks identical in all three cases, which is why the album question has its own guide. -
Reels live on
/reel/or/reels/. They are always vertical video with an audio track, and they are the format most often pasted into the wrong tool. -
Stories live on
/stories/and exist for 24 hours. After that they are gone unless the creator saved them to a Highlight — no tool can retrieve an expired Story, because it no longer exists publicly. - Profile pictures are not posts at all. They are served small on the page, so a full-size copy needs a tool that targets the original rather than the displayed thumbnail.
Match the URL to the tool

- A profile’s picture → Profile picture downloader
When you are unsure whether a feed post is an album, start with the carousel tool. It handles single-item posts correctly, whereas the image tool returns only the first slide of an album — expected behaviour, but a surprise if you were not expecting it.
What is impossible, and why
Being clear about the limits saves more time than any troubleshooting step. None of the following are solvable by trying a different tool or a different site:
- Private accounts. If a logged-out browser cannot open the post, nothing can resolve it. Instappa never asks for an Instagram login, so anything requiring one is out of scope permanently.
- Expired Stories. After 24 hours the media is no longer published. There is nothing left to fetch.
- Deleted posts. Once removed, a post is gone regardless of whether you saw it earlier.
- Quality beyond what Instagram published. Instagram re-encodes every upload, and only those encodes ever exist publicly. No tool can recover the creator’s original file.
Everything else — a failed paste, a wrong tool, a throttled request, a blocked browser download — is recoverable, and the troubleshooting guide walks the causes in the order they actually occur.
